Over 60 people, representing Boards of Trustees, teaching staff and community of a Porirua East Group (PEG) schools, met last Thursday to move forward with a proposed Digital Power Porirua initiative.  This meeting was aimed to get agreement from Boards of Trustees on providing digital power to students across 13 local schools.  There is also discussion about how early childhood providers - kohanga reo, aoga amata, kindergartens - can become involved with the project.

At the Shine Porirua Education Summit this year, more than 200 people agreed to work together to help all young people in Porirua achieve their full potential. The Porirua East Group of schools have been working together to raise student achievement and are ready to take the step so children can have affordable access to digital technology at school and at home.  Research shows that digital technology helps students to be more engaged in their learning. It helps them work on different tasks at their own pace, or in teams. It also helps parents to stay in touch with what children are learning and how well they are progressing.

Digital Power, Porirua will work with schools and families so that:

  • every family can have laptops for learning at an affordable price.
  • every family can have affordable access to broadband at home.

Several speakers presented case studies for digital learning and digital equity, including: Michele Whiting (Principal, Corinna School), Louise Mikaere (BOT Te Kura Maori o Porirua), Kathe Tawhiwhirangi (Te Toi Tupu/CORE Education), Anthony Royal (Nga Pu Waea, 2Degrees Board).

Student voice was also heard through whanau testimonial and video clips produced by students as part of their classroom work - using digital tools to access, process and present information.

The PEG schools and their community are harnessing the power that comes from having access to digital tools and real time / real life learning opportunities.  They are also harnessing the power and momentum of collaboration; working together towards shared goals of improving outcomes for young people in Porirua.
